“Us?”

“That is what he said.”

“Hmm! Okay, let me lock up my desk.” Piles of folders were pushed into an empty drawer as a small key secured them.

“Are you not worried about why he wants to see us?”

“I can’t be worried about something when I don’t know what is happening. So, let’s go find out what our boss wants. Come on.”

They walk together down the hallway which seemed smaller now. Bonnie felt an electric jolt shoot through her body as their two shoulders brushed against each other. Circuits who have been dead for a long time fired up. After this meeting, I am going to ask her out, Bonnie thought.

Kathleen looked over, smiling. “You look nice today. I love that outfit. Those slacks look good and the color brings out your eyes.”

“Oh, thank you! I am not much of a dresser. Prefer jeans.” Don’t read too much into it, she told herself. That was a compliment, not flirting.

Kathleen knocked on the door and opened it, allowing Bonnie to enter first. She followed. Mr. Carr’s face grew redder the longer he talked. The tips of his ears glowed. “There is no excuse for this. Brunswick is a million-dollar account. We are going to lose it because of a first-year mistake.” He pointed his crooked finger at Kathleen. “This better get fixed.”

Kathleen sat in her chair. Her back remained straight, hands folded. No expression. Despite this, Bonnie was jumping around like a fish out of water. For a moment, there was silence in the room.

Kathleen took the opportunity to talk. “Mr. Carr, something simple got missed if the numbers you have shown us are accurate. It was my account, not Bonnie’s. She only did the end of year overseas accounts. I am to blame if there is a huge error. But, I don’t believe that is the truth. Let us work on it and get back to you in a couple of weeks.”

“You do what you have to do. If I have to tell Brunswick Shops that they owe the IRS a million dollars because of a mistake our firm made —” Lowering his head, Mr. Carr braced himself on the desk with two straight elbows. He continued after raising his head. “—you can bet the both of you are fired.”

Bonnie swallowed hard. Kathleen smiled at his words. What the hell? How can she be so calm?

“I don’t think that will be necessary. May we get to work on this?” Kathleen asked.

“Yes, get out of here!”

Once the door was closed, Kathleen turned to Bonnie. Her hand touched her forearm. “Bonnie, clear the stuff off your desk and calendar. Meet me at my desk. Bring the offshore records for Brunswick. We will have to work through lunch.”

“Yes ma’am.” Bonnie’s insides were a mess. The boss’ lecture and Kathleen’s touches had Bonnie nearly running to the bathroom. She felt a terrible case of bad IBS coming on.

“Bonnie, I am your coworker; therefore, there is no need to call me ma’am. We will fix this. Don’t let all that smoke he blew out his ass upset you.
